Approximately 100,000 copies of the olive drab covers were issued, while only 5,250 of the maroon were issued. Following the hastily prepared temporary handbook in 1910, the year the Boy Scouts of America was founded, t he BSA attempted to address several glaring omissions by forming an editorial board to guide the production of the book, and assigning subject matter experts to pen individual chapters. The result was the first official Boy Scout Handbook, with the forward by Ernest Thompson Seton summing up its goals: We send out our'Official Handbook,' therefore, with the earnest wish that many boys may find in it new methods for the proper use of their leisure time and fresh inspiration in their efforts to make their hours of recreation contribute to strong, noble manhood in the days to come.
